The best metal site on the net is holding a competition to find out., the ultimate real metal reference website is hosting a sports-style tournament whereby 64 of the apparent best metal albums ever released are battling out in a round-by-round public vote to get to take the crown.

It really isn’t a surprise that so far Number of the Beast and Diary of a Madman are whipping Blood Mountain and Imaginations From The Other Side respectively in the first round (although perhaps Crack the Skye is better than Blood Mountain?).

I’m hoping that the websites’ users will surprise me and not just get either Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood to number one as I think may well happen. (I do love M.o.P. though).

It’s a pretty solid line-up of albums mixing the massive (Sabbath, Deep Purple, Megadeth etc.) with the popular-on-the-underground (Amon Amarth, Kreator etc.). Although I wonder why good but mid-standard Dark Tranquillity album Damage Done is there ahead of the more influential earlier stuff like The Gallery or Projector (as In Flames has early-album The Jester Race in there).

I am also puzzled as to why on earth Nightwish got in their with Oceanborn which wasn’t even in the Top 10 of either the site’s readers or the author of the site for 1998.

Perhaps Children of Bodom’s Hatebreeder, and The Haunted’s Made Me Do It should have been contenders too?

What do you think of the list? Who would you pick as the winner?
